Being healthy isn’t a quick fix, it’s a lifestyle change. The biggest way to make the lifestyle change that sticks is to make small changes that lead to healthier decisions. When most people decide they want to be healthier they often try to make several large changes all at once which typically leads to failure.

A better way to make changes that will keep you on track is to set yourself up to make small better decisions every day. Over the last year, I’ve been working on some personal hacks that have helped me continuously make these small healthier decisions that have kept me on track toward living a healthier lifestyle.

Healthy Lifestyle Hack: Drinking More Water!

Drinking water helps promote energy, can boost your metabolism, and helps maximize physical performance. There is some debate on how much water one should drink every day. But one thing is certain, drinking water is better for you than drinking soda-pop and most if not all juices and other carbonated beverages. We all know this, but the tough part is actually following through with drinking water. The hack here is simple and easy to follow. In order to drink more water strategically place water bottles in places that will remind you to drink water before you go for another option.

Example 1: If you have flavored drinks in your refrigerator, place a row or two of water in front of your flavored drinks so you have to actively bypass your water to get to the other drinks. In other words, make your water easy to get to and the flavored drinks more difficult to get to.

Example 2: I keep a water bottle on my desk at work so that whenever I feel the need to hit a vending machine for a snack. I remember to stop by the water fountain on the way to the snack machine. This helps because it’s healthier  option than buying something from the pop machine. Plus I save $2 by not purchasing a drink from the vending machine.

Bonus: You can get extra motivation for example 2 by tracking the money you saved by drinking water instead of buying a drink from the vending machine!

Healthy Lifestyle Hack: Exercising After Work!

When you get home from work you usually just want to relax, but often times it’s just the second part of your workday. Cook, clean, get the kids ready for bed, get prepared for tomorrow, and the next thing you know it’s late and the only thing you feel like doing is going to sleep.

With our busy schedules, it can be difficult to find time to get into a consistent exercise routine. The hack I found to help me get around the post-workday struggle and into exercise mode is pretty simple… when I get home the first thing I do is put on my workout clothes and I commit to doing a small workout. The idea here is simple, when I find myself finally unwinding from my day and getting ready to relax I notice that I’m wearing my workout clothes and it pushes me to do a quick 10 minute to 20 minute workout.

Healthy Lifestyle Hack: Healthy Nudges!

One of the best things you can have is someone in your corner telling you that you’re almost there, just one more, or a 5-minute walk would hit your goal for the day. Fitness trackers provide you with this information and more. Personally, I’ve been using the Apple Watch for the last year and it has definitely helped push me to be healthier on a daily basis. From reminders to stand up, breathe, and exercise to its ability to track my progress. I find it a very useful tool to keep me motivated.

Healthy Lifestyle Hack: Signup For a Goal!

It’s one thing to make a list of health goals for the year, it’s another thing to signup for something that forces you to meet your goal. For example, in 2017 I set the goal that by the end of the year I wanted to be able to run 5 miles without stopping. At the time when I set the goal, I could barely run 1 mile without stopping.

One thing that helped me to adhere to my goal was signing up for an 8k race. During the year I had my ups and downs with my consistency on preparing to complete my goal, but signing up for the race made me push myself as the race neared to complete my goal in order to be ready for the race. I paid money to register for the race, if I came unprepared for the race I just wasted $50 that I could’ve used on something else like a nice dinner or adult beverages. In the end, I successfully completed my goal and it motivated me to make a more aggressive goal for 2018!

    Great tips! I’m a big believer in small changes, and often these are the things that give the best results and the most satisfaction, rather than chasing big and unsustainable changes.
